Do unto others … Not always !

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Even if you are super liberal about sharing your masterpieces online and don’t care how they get used  by strangers, you still need to understand that others might not reciprocate the same way.
Just because you leave your doors open to strangers and welcome one and all into your home, it doesn’t mean you are welcome to walk into anybody’s home!

I’m saying this regarding online sharing but it will work in other situations too -
Respect the rights and choices of others even if you don’t care about them respecting yours!!

8 questions to ask yourself before sharing images online.

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

How an image is shared online is the author’s personal choice and should be respected. The choice, however, should be an informed one. These 8 questions will help you be clear about your decision and attitude towards online images.
As the image owner you should be clear about the following:

  1. Do you want attribution?
  2. Do you want to make a profit?
  3. Do you care if others monetize your photos?
  4. Do you care who sees your photos?
  5. Do you care if your photos get modified on the Internet?
  6. Do you want people to explicitly get your permission before “using” your content?
  7. Are you prepared to register your images with the official copyright office?
  8. Do you want to legally pursue people who allegedly stole your images?

Try to answer these questions subjectively in terms of
(i) Don’t Care, (ii) Good to Have/Maybe (iii) a MUST
Just being clear about these points could save you an unpleasant experience with your photos later on.
